Our services: civil partnerships
Since the Civil Partnership Act 2004 came into force on 5 December 2005, same-sex couples can commit to a civil partnership, which gives the relationship the legal status and rights equivalent to a marriage.
The legal status of civil partners has wide-ranging implications, including:
- Duty to provide reasonable maintenance for your civil partner and any children of the family
- Ability to apply for Parental Responsibility for your civil partner’s child
Inheritance and recognition on intestacy - Tax issues, including inheritance tax
- Protection from domestic violence
- Access to fatal accidents compensation
- Dissolution, which is the equivalent of divorce and the financial and other implications.
We can advise on the legal implications of entering into a civil partnership and steps that can be taken to help protect assets that a partner brings to the relationship or inherits.
We can also represent you if the civil partnership breaks down and if you wish to dissolve the relationship legally, which involves dealing with financial issues.
